Freiston Shore

Freiston Shore was one of the UK’s largest managed realignment schemes when 66 ha of farmland was converted into tidal saltmarsh, a saline lagoon was created and arable land was turned to wet grassland. All benefiting birds such as redshank, avocet and ringed plover. This naturally regenerated salt marsh area provides valuable wildlife habitats all year round. Freiston Shore is a Special Protection Area that benefits wintering, passage and nesting birds and allows the public excellent views. Up to 5000 black-tailed godwits spend the winter in this part of The Wash. Knot start to arrive in late June and by late summer can number 16000 birds. Oyster catchers often gather in large numbers for high tide.

The most important estuary for waterbirds in the UK

The RSPB has worked with the Environmental Agency to convert 66 hectares of coastal farmland into tidal salt marsh which benefits birds who have lost such tidal habitats elsewhere in the UK.

This is the ideal location for bird enthusiast, with sitings of Tree Sparrows, Skylarks and Yellowhammers all year round plus various seasonal visitors. There are excellent views to be found, especially on the salt water lagoon at high tide - often attracting wading birds in their thousands.
