A former clay pit that features open water and extensive reedbeds. Fifteen species of duck have been recorded here and moorhen, water rail, reed bunting, reed and sedge warblers all nest here. Short-eared owls and bitterns visit in winter, marsh harriers in spring.

About Huttoft Bank Pit
These pits were created after the devastating East Coast floods of 1953. Clay was taken to improve and raise the sea defences and the resulting pits have been turned into a series of man-made nature reserves.

What you will see
Fifteen species of duck have been recorded here and moorhen, water rail, reed bunting, reed and sedge warblers all nest here. Short-eared owls and bitterns visit in winter, marsh harriers in spring.

Huttoft Car Terrace is very popular spot with visitors and one of the very few where you can sit in your car and watch the sea. Walk to Sandilands or take one of our circular walks inland.

Plantlife
The open expanse of water and extensive reed beds encourage plants such as fennel pondweed, sea club-rush, great reedmace, brackish water-crowfoot, soft hornwort and yellow flag.
